Mold vs. Soap Scum: How to Tell Them Apart, Clean Them, and Prevent Them
What's the difference between mold and soap scum?
Soap scum is a chemical deposit. Mold is a living organism. Soap scum forms when soap's fatty acids react with minerals in hard water, leaving a chalky film on walls and glass. Mold is a fungus that grows in damp, porous places — grout, caulk, door tracks — and feeds on the residue soap scum leaves behind.
That last point matters: soap scum is mold's food source. Clean one and you make the other harder to establish.

How do you clean mold?
Spray the affected area with a bleach or hydrogen peroxide product, leave it 10 minutes, scrub with a stiff brush, and rinse. Ventilate the whole time and wear gloves.
The important caveat: on porous surfaces, bleach whitens the stain without reliably killing what's rooted underneath, so it often returns. Mold growing in silicone caulk is generally not salvageable — cut the old caulk out and replace it with a mildew-resistant silicone.
How do you prevent mold?
Moisture control does more than any product. Run the exhaust fan 20 to 30 minutes after showering, keep bathroom humidity under about 60%, squeegee the glass, and leave the shower door or curtain open to dry.

How do you clean soap scum?
Spray warm distilled vinegar mixed 1:1 with liquid dish soap, let it dwell 15 to 30 minutes, agitate with a non-scratch pad, then rinse and dry. Never use acid on natural stone. Marble, travertine, and limestone etch permanently. Use a pH-neutral, stone-safe cleaner instead.
How do you prevent soap scum?
Switch from bar soap to body wash — bar soap's fatty acids are what react with hard water, while body washes use synthetic detergents that mostly don't. Then squeegee the glass after each shower, use a no-rinse daily shower spray, and consider a water softener if your water is hard.
